{"id":954,"date":"2022-04-17T23:50:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-17T19:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.semsgarden.com\/blog\/?p=954"},"modified":"2022-04-17T23:50:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-17T19:50:16","slug":"planting-of-hardy-ferns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.semsgarden.com\/blog\/gardening\/grasses-and-ferns\/planting-of-hardy-ferns\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting hardy ferns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some varieties of ferns.&nbsp;Make your choice !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One of the best known,&nbsp;<em>asplenium<\/em>&nbsp;.&nbsp;It has evergreen foliage and grows well in humus soil without excess humidity in winter.<\/li><li>The variety &#8216;Cristatum&#8217; has leaves that look like salad!<\/li><li><em>Polystichum setiferum<\/em>&nbsp;&#8216;Congestum&#8217; has evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage.&nbsp;The fronds can freeze and disappear in the winter when it is too cold.&nbsp;Cut them at the end of winter so that they start again.&nbsp;Height: 40 to 70 cm.<\/li><li><em>Dryopteris lepidopoda<\/em>&nbsp;grows to 70 cm in height.&nbsp;The fronds that grow in spring turn from yellow to red before finally turning green.<\/li><li><em>Dryopteris erythrosora<\/em>&nbsp;has a beautiful salmon color on young foliage.<\/li><li><em>Polystichum polyblepharum<\/em>&nbsp;(or bear&#8217;s paw) rises to 80 cm in height and has very chiseled foliage.<\/li><li><em>Athyrium niponicum<\/em>&nbsp;&#8216;Ursula&#8217;s Red&#8217; has deciduous, purple and silvery decorative foliage.&nbsp;Height: 40 cm.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plant them:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose a location in a grove under trees.<\/li><li>Lift the earth with a claw.<\/li><li>Bring chippings and&nbsp;compost&nbsp;to poor&nbsp;soils&nbsp;.<\/li><li>Place the fern in the ground.<\/li><li>Bring back the existing soil to fill the hole.<\/li><li>Tamp lightly.<\/li><li>Return the existing foam to the foot.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ferns can also be planted in an old stump or a low wall.&nbsp;For that :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make a mixture of soil with a little compost.<\/li><li>Incorporate it into the stump and plant the fern (here an ox tongue \/ asplenium).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether deciduous or persistent,&nbsp;ferns&nbsp;bring freshness to the garden as long as it is exposed to partial shade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some varieties of ferns.&nbsp;Make your choice !
