Evidence from Hosner et al. 2013 supports treating Aethopyga tibolii as a species, but they note Aethopyga boltoni and Aethopyga tibolii 'are the least well-differentiated Aethopyga taxa that we consider splitting. We advocate further evidence from future sampling efforts, increased sampling of genetic markers, and a deeper examination of specimen material to increase support for a taxonomic change.'
