Comment:
Erpeton is available as a Latin scientific name from the initial Lacépède work, even though the species is not (it was not given a Latin scientific name until a later Latreille work). In any case, the etymology is clearly from the Greek (Epsilon, rho, pi, epsilon, tau, nu), which is neuter, so per Art. 30.1.2 the genus is neuter, and the adjectival species must reflect a neuter form. The later addition of the leading 'H' (Herpeton, per Wagler, 1830:169) is an unnecessary emendation
