Erythrocebus patas: Geographic Information Erythrocebus patas: Comments Comment:
Status: CITES - Appendix II; IUCN - Lower Risk (lc)
Comment:
Comments: Subspecies may exist, but at least some of the features supposed to characterize them were based on changes to the female's facial pattern during pregnancy (Groves, 2001c)
Comment:
"In her ongoing studies on the taxonomy and distributions of patas monkeys, Yvonne de Jong (in litt. to Anthony B., Rylands, 19 January 2020) considered that further research is needed regarding the taxonomic status of pyrrhonotus. It appears, for example, that it occurs in a cline with patas monkeys in Central Africa and she indicated that it would be appropriate to leave it as a subspecies of E. patas for the time being. Gippoliti's 2017 review was only partial and, considering the little-known and numerous synonyms (see Groves, 2001), further research on patas monkeys throughout their range is urgently needed, especially since some 'forgotten' but valid taxa might well be endangered." (Anthony Rylands, pers. comm., 20 December 2020)
