Sister genus to Neotomys-Reithrodon based on cladistic evaluation of morphological characters (Ortiz et al., 2000b; Pardiñas, 1997; Steppan, 1995; Steppan and Sullivan, 2000). See remarks under Reithrodon on tribal affiliation. Relatively few specimens exist to substantiate the specific taxonomy and distribution of the genus.
