Geneion: Comments
Comment:
David S. Jordan (1919) assigned Tetraodon (Geneion) maculatus as the orthotype and considered Geneion to be junior synonym of Lagocephalus. Jordan also listed Tetraodon honkeni to Amblyrhynchotus (now Amblyrynchote) and commented 'apparently distinct from Lagocephalus Swainson'
Comment:
See Kottelat (2001:613-614) and Kotellat (2013:477) and the other cited works. The type species of Geneion was found to be conspecific with that of Amblyrhynchote (ending variously as -es or -us, which are now considered misspellings) by Hardy (1983:2). This species synonymy was also presented by Le Danois (1959:189), although that author still retained the two genera as valid (apparently not realizing that she had moved the type species of Amblyrhynchotes to another genus). As the two genera had the same priority under the ICZN 'Code,' which takes priority is to be decided by a First Reviser citing both 'and selecting from them' (ICZN Art. 24.2). Kottelat argues that the first reviser could have been either Le Danois or Shipp (1974:19), although on close examination both are questionable. It is also hard to argue that Hardy fulfills the criteria of first reviser. Kottelat (2001) may fulfill those criteria, and if that work did not, then Kottelat (2013) certainly did. No works are known to have treated Geneion as synonym of a valid genus Amblyrhynchote/-es/-us prior to Kottelat's works. The only recourse to avoid Kottelat's conclusion would be a petition to the ICZN to suppress Geneion, and given that only one species is involved, and it is not a prominent market species, it is hard to imagine that such a proposal would be passed
