Comments: Subgenus Gerbillus. Lay (1983) noted that the karyotype of this Moroccan endemic was distinct from that of G. andersoni, and provided detailed morphological and chromosomal contrasts between G. occiduus and Moroccan G. hoogstraali and G. hesperinus.
