Nelson et al. (2004:193) note of Lepisostteiformes that 'extant gar and the fossil Semionotidae are often recognized in the same order, either under the ordinal name Lepisosteiformes or Semionotiformes. Pending ongoign stufies by L. Grande on the interrelationships of this group, we follow L. Grande and W. E. Bemis, 1998, Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Memoir 4 (Supplement to J. Vertebr. Paleontol. 18(1)), p. 634, who separated the two groups into different orders, Lepisosteiformes and Semionotiformes.' Ruggiero et al. (2015) have followed this separation
