Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2004) places Marosatherina in Family Telmatherinidae. Dyer & Chernoff (1996) did not use that family name, but the type genus, Telmatherina, was placed in Melanotaeniidae. ITIS is currently following the higher classification of Dyer & Chernoff (1996), so the placement of this genus follows that treatment
