Comments: Considered conspecific with Sundaic M. whiteheadi by Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951), but musschenbroekii is a separate species endemic to Sulawesi (Medway, 1977; Musser, 1991). Spermatozoal morphology more similar to that described for Malayan species of Maxomys than to sperm of other sampled Sulawesian species (Breed and Musser, 1991).
