Smith in his 1853 Catalogue of Hymenopterous Insects in the Collection of the British Museum, Part I included two different descriptions for Megachile maculata Smith, 1853 - on pages 160 (No. 50) and 170 (No. 80). Dalla Torre, 1896 published Megachile macularis as a replacement name for Megachile maculata Smith, 1853 (page 170, No. 80), a junior primary homonym of Megachile maculata Smith, 1853 (page 160, No. 50)
