Mustela frenata notia: Comments
Comment:
Mandatory correction for gender concordance. Originally as Putorius noveboracensis notius, then later used as Mustela noveboracensis notia by relevant authors, such as Miller (1912:97 & 1924:120), Hall (1927:193), Allen (1931:242), and Komarek & Komarek (1938:150). Hall (1981:997) follows Miller & Kellogg (1955:740) in treating it as a synonym and they only mention the original combination, so do not take a stance on this. Bangs (1899:53) gave the meaning of notius as 'southern', which corresponds to a Latinization of the Greek notios. This should be treated as adjectival, so the name in this combination should be Mustela frenata notia, not M. f. notius
