Lissovsky et al. (2017) hypothesize that Ochotona forresti duoxionglaensis Chen and Li, 2009 may need to be moved to be a subspecies of Ochotona macrotis, but they did not have genetic data for this subspecies. They additionally suggest there may be another subspecies from Bhutan that would need to be named. ITIS will leave the subspecies where it was pending further published information
