Originally described as Nais litoralis by Müller (1874), this taxon was placed in the genus Paranais by either Alfred G. Bourne (1891) or Wilhelm Michaelsen (1900); mjw will attempt to access these publications to verify this information, as the review of the genus Paranais in North America by Brinkhurst and Coates (1985) provided no useful information to clarify this issue
