Turgeon et al. (1998) note that "This species has usually been considered (e.g., R. T. Abbott, 1974, American seashells, 2nd ed.:442) to be a member of the Pecten subgenus Euvola Dall, 1898. T. R. Waller in S. E. Shumway, ed., 1991, Scallops: biology, ecology and aquaculture:1-73, used Euvola (with its type species E. ziczac) as a full genus, but he did not explicitly transfer this species to Euvola"
