Originally described as Ilyodrilus bedoti by Édouard Émile Piguet (1913, p. 124), this taxon was later thought to be a variant of Potamothrix bavaricus by Brinkhurst (1971, p. 492); Timm (1970) stated these two taxa were separate from one another, confirmed independently by Spencer (1978)
