Psammoryctides convolutus: Comments
Comment:
Loden (1978) divided the genus Psammoryctides Hrabe, 1964 into two subgenera, Psammoryctides (Psammoryctides) and Psammoryctides (Spencerius), to differentiate European species in the genus from those in North America. Taxa in the subgenus Psammoryctides are characterized by having the swollen glandular part of the ejaculatory duct ending in a penis, while the taxa in the subgenus Spencerius have an ejaculatory duct comprised of three parts. The following year, Vincent (1979) reported P. P. barbatus from the St. Lawrence River, a species previously thought restricted to European waters. The validity of these two subgenera remains unresolved, although recent publications that list / discuss Psammoryctides species have not included the subgeneric classifications; I chose not to include these in this current ITIS dataset, but am willing to provide it at a later date, especially after further support has been published
