Comments: Rattus leucopus species group; member of the R. niobe complex. Taylor et al., (1982) treated arrogans as a subspecies of R. niobe and western montane counterpart of the eastern R. n. niobe. Our examination of hundreds of specimens in AMNH led us to a different interpretation. There are at least three species in what is currently regarded as R. niobe.
