According to Eschmeyer (online Catalog of Fishes, 2004) Stromateus maculatus Forster 1794 is "not in current literature but cited in Whitley 1935. Original as Stromateus? maculatus. Whitley regards as unidentifiable, possibly an ally of Platycephalus, Serriolella, or perhaps a young Coryphaena." There is an apparent connection between Seriolella maculata and Stromateus maculatus, but the connection is not definite at this time
