Comments: Subgenus Sorex, S. araneus group. A sibling species of araneus (Meylan and Hausser, 1978), characterized mainly by the karyotype (2n = 22/24, FN = 44). Its distribution broadly overlaps with that of araneus in Germany. Revised by Hausser (1990), range map in Mitchell-Jones et al. (1999)
