Comments: Subgenus Sorex. S. caecutiens group. Karyotype has 2n = 42, FN = 70. Included in caecutiens by Abe (1967) and Corbet (1978c), but Imaizumi (1970b) treated shinto as a separate species, a view supported by Pavlinov and Rossolimo (1987), and by the allozyme data of George (1988). Ohdachi et al. (1997a) used mitochondrial gene sequences to show that both species occur in Japan: caecutiens in Hokkaido, and shinto in Honshu, Shikoku, and Sado.
