Szywilewska-Szczykutowicz & Olszanowski (2007: 17) assert that the epithet cladonicola should be treated as adjectival, and changed the name to Trhypochthonius cladonicolus 'to reflect the masculine gender of Trhypochthonius.' Willmann's original description (1920: 553-554) noted that it was found on the lichen Cladonia (a genus of lichen), so the name appears to be a compound noun (cf. ICZN Articles 30.1.4.2 & 31.2.1) meaning, roughly, lichen-dweller. If this interpretation is accepted, the epithet must not be changed to reflect the gender of the genus with which it is combined
