Originally described in the genus Lumbricus by Müller 91774), this taxon has been found in a variety of forms, originally described as species, then varieties, and more recently as subspecies (see Hrabe 1966), and, historically, with some of the forms and variants placed in the genera Nais, Sainuris, and Limnodrilus; see Brinkhurst (1971) and literature cited therein
