Banks et al. (2004) note: "The large gecko from Palau, here called Gekko vittatus, is an undescribed form (Crombie and Pregill, 1999, Herpetol. Monogr. 13:45) and likely the same as reported in prehistoric and historic fossil sites in the Marianas Islands (Pregill, 1998, Copeia 1998:70, and pers.comm.)." The native populations of this undescribed gecko on the Marianas Islands and Guam have been extirpated
