Comments: Original use of the name was as a subgenus of Capromys. Included in Capromys by Mohr (1939:75), Varona (1974:67), Hall (1981:865), and Corbet and Hill (1991:203). Considered a distinct genus by Miller (1929), Woods and Howland (1979:112), and Morgan (1985:30). Includes columbianus, pleistocenicus (see Hall, 1981:866), and megas (see Varona and Arredondo, 1979), which are known only from Holocene fossils from Cuba
