(1999), and Mattern and McLennan (2000) considered Neofelis either as the most primitive member of the Pantherinae, or as the first outgroup. Placed in Felinae by McKenna and Bell (1997). Considered a synonym of Pardofelis by Corbet and Hill (1992)
