The name was originally given as 'Pteropus gilliardi, new species,' with the note that 'this new species of Pteropus is named in their honor,' with reference to E. Thomas Gilliard and Margaret Gilliard (Van Deusen, 1969). The epithet was later emended to gilliardorum per ICZN Article 31.1.2
