Purple Milkweed is a perennial wildflower indigenous to the eastern and central regions of the United States. Although it is considered a rare species in North Carolina, it thrives in a variety of habitats, ranging from swampy areas to dry woodlands and meadows found in the Piedmont and mountainous regions. This plant resembles common milkweed, but its flowers display a richer hue, varying from deep purple to rose-pink. Blooming from May to July, these flowers form clusters that are particularly appealing to bees and butterflies. Additionally, the leaves serve as a host for monarch butterfly larvae. Purple Milkweed can spread vigorously through both seeds and rhizomes, making it unsuitable for smaller gardens.

This wildflower is relatively easy to cultivate, thriving in well-drained soils that are moderately moist to dry, and it prefers full sunlight. It is also tolerant of drought and resistant to deer. Ideal for naturalized settings, Purple Milkweed can be used in meadows, native plant gardens, wildflower patches, and along the edges of streams or ponds, where it can effectively attract butterflies.
