Phonetic Spelling:kal-uh-KOR-tus gun-nis-SON-ee-eye

Genus:Calochortus

Species:gunnisonii

Family:Marantaceae

Gunnison's Mariposa is a striking species of lily bulb that produces purple or white flowers and is indigenous to the western United States, particularly in the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills. This vibrant wildflower thrives in dry meadows, sagebrush areas, and woodlands at elevations ranging from 3,280 to 10,827 feet. Its exotic blooms, which can be either white or purple, prefer sunny spots and flourish in moist to dry loamy and rocky soils.

The name "Calochortus" is derived from the Greek words "kalos," meaning "beautiful," and "chortos," which translates to "grass," highlighting its grass-like green foliage. The term "Mariposa" is Spanish for "butterfly."

This plant is quite rare and difficult to locate, and it is unlikely to thrive in the hot, humid conditions typical of the southeastern United States.
