Curly Sedge is a native plant found along the riverbanks of New Zealand's South Island. This sedge grows at a moderate pace, forming dense, fountain-like clumps that reach about one foot in height. Its narrow leaves, which range from light green to buff cream, provide visual interest throughout the year. For optimal growth, it should be planted in areas that receive consistent moisture on a weekly basis, along with full sun to partial shade. As an evergreen, this low-growing plant is often utilized in garden beds to highlight more vibrant plants with striking foliage or flowers. When planted in groups along a slope, it can create a texture reminiscent of flowing water. Curly Sedge serves as an effective groundcover and is suitable for woodland gardens, poolside landscapes, or arranged in grids in contemporary gardens. It also thrives when placed along pond banks, used as an edging plant, or incorporated into rock gardens and containers. This resilient plant easily reseeds itself and is tolerant of drought, deer, and wet conditions. However, if planted in a wet area, ensure that the crown remains above water, as it cannot survive being submerged.
