Mountain Mahogany is a native shrub or small tree belonging to the rose family, primarily located in the western United States and northern Mexico. It typically thrives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the expansive plains. While it can grow up to 20 feet tall, it often remains between 3 to 8 feet due to grazing by herbivores. Its most striking characteristic is its showy, feathery seed heads.
This plant favors well-drained sandy to clay loam soils and requires full sunlight. Once established, it demonstrates good drought resistance. Mountain Mahogany is an excellent choice for use on slopes to prevent erosion, as well as for creating borders or enhancing open woodland areas.
