Phonetic Spelling:hab-en-AR-ee-uh REE-penz

Genus:Habenaria

Species:repens

Family:Orchidaceae

The Water-spider Orchid is a perennial species native to wetland environments, including blackwater swamps, pools, and the banks of creeks and rivers, stretching from North Carolina down to Florida and westward to southeastern Arkansas and Texas, as well as into tropical regions of America. This orchid can thrive both on land and in water, often creating floating mats in still pools. It propagates through stolons and tends to grow vigorously, particularly in moist conditions.

From summer to fall, the orchid produces flowers that bloom repeatedly, releasing a strong vanilla scent at night to attract moths for pollination. Transplanting this plant can be challenging, and many "nursery-grown" specimens are often illegally harvested from their natural habitats, so it’s essential to ensure that any plants you purchase are nursery-propagated.

The Water-spider Orchid thrives in consistently moist to wet environments with acidic soil. It flourishes in bogs alongside pitcher plants, at the edges of ponds, streams, and lakes, or even in containers.
