Among the most intriguing additions to the holly family is the 'Oakleaf' holly. This stunning evergreen originated as a chance seedling from the renowned 'Mary Nell' holly. Introduced in the mid-1990s, 'Oakleaf' is one of five varieties collectively known as the "red hollies." Its name is derived from the leaf shape, which closely resembles that of the native Scarlet Oak tree. The foliage boasts a pleasing medium green hue, accented by lighter edges, contributing to the plant's overall attractive appearance. To produce berries, a male pollinator is necessary.
This cultivar can grow to a height of 14 feet, with some instances reported at 20 feet. With a spread of eight feet, 'Oakleaf' holly is perfect for creating evergreen hedges or for mass plantings aimed at providing privacy. Its striking presence also makes it an excellent choice for use as a specimen plant in your garden. It thrives in full sun or in very light shade.
