Phonetic Spelling:il-LISS-ee-um an-ee-SAH-tum
Genus:Illicium
Species:anisatum
Family:Schisandraceae
A broadleaf evergreen shrub belonging to the Schisandraceae family, this plant is indigenous to Japan. Unlike some species, it does not propagate through root suckers to create colonies. It can withstand wet environments, dense shade, and soil erosion, although it is not particularly resilient to cold temperatures. This shrub flourishes in conditions akin to those preferred by rhododendrons. It makes an excellent choice for informal hedges, rain gardens, or for allowing it to grow naturally. While its fruit is toxic in large amounts and not suitable for consumption, the leaves are traditionally burned as incense in Japan. Additionally, florists value these leaves for their longevity after being cut, as they remain fresh for an extended period.
