Kosteletzkya virginica exhibits a moderate tolerance to salt. Commonly referred to as Seashore Mallow, sweat weed, Virginia saltmarsh mallow, or salt marsh mallow, this herb thrives in marshy areas along the eastern coastline of the United States. Notably, its flowers bloom for only a single day.
Preferred Habitat: Marshes with brackish to nearly fresh water.
In 1990, this plant was honored as the Wildflower of the Year in North Carolina, a recognition facilitated by the North Carolina Botanical Garden with financial backing from the Garden Club of North Carolina.
