**Tall Fescue as a Lawn**
Tall fescue, the most commonly cultivated cool-season grass in North Carolina, is known for its resilience to heat and drought, as well as its resistance to diseases, requiring minimal maintenance. This grass exhibits a clumping growth pattern, which may necessitate annual reseeding in areas where it struggles to thrive.
Although it shares similarities with Kentucky bluegrass, annual ryegrass, and perennial ryegrass, tall fescue is distinguished by its rolled leaf bud vernation and the rough edges of its leaf blades. Like perennial ryegrass, it features non-clasping auricles, and the underside of its leaf blades is less shiny compared to those of annual ryegrass.
**Tall Fescue as a Weed**
Similar to other turfgrasses, tall fescue can be challenging to manage as a weed within an established lawn. To effectively control it, choose a suitable turfgrass species and cultivar, and implement proper mowing and fertilization practices to promote a dense and healthy lawn. Hand removal or digging can be effective methods for eliminating unwanted perennial turfgrasses. Alternatively, you can apply a non-selective herbicide to affected areas, but be aware that this will also harm the desired turfgrass.
