Annual ryegrass, a winter annual or biennial weed belonging to the grass family, originates from Europe and is prevalent throughout North Carolina. This versatile plant serves multiple purposes, including as a cover crop, for silage production, and as an ornamental feature. However, it has the potential to become invasive in temperate agricultural regions and natural habitats. Typically, it reaches heights of 2 to 3 feet, characterized by numerous long, narrow, and rigid leaves clustered at the base. Both sides of the leaves exhibit a bright, glossy, and smooth texture. A flowering spike measuring 6 to 10 inches develops, featuring alternate spikelets, with blooming occurring from spring through fall. Each fertile floret eventually transforms into an elongated grain.
Annual ryegrass thrives in rich, moist soils found in mild climates, though it can adapt to various soil types. However, it struggles to endure extreme winter conditions or hot, dry summers.
