Names

Golden Hurricane Lily, Golden Spider Lily

  • Photo of Lycoris aurea (Lycoris aureas)

Phonetic Spelling:LY-kor-iss AR-re-uh

Genus:Lycoris

Species:aurea

Family:Amaryllidaceae

The Golden Spider Lily is a striking bulb that showcases vibrant orange-yellow flowers on tall stems during August and September, seemingly emerging from thin air. The slender basal leaves develop after the flowering period and persist through spring, eventually dying back as the bulb enters a necessary hot, dry dormancy. In regions with humid summers or those situated north of its hardiness zone, it is advisable to cultivate these plants in pots.

When planting, place the bulbs about 8 inches deep in clusters of 3 to 5. They thrive in full to partial sunlight and prefer well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It's important to select a permanent location for them, as they do not respond well to being moved. In northern climates, ensure to apply a good layer of mulch during winter.

Propagation can be achieved through division or seeds, although it may take up to five years for seedlings to bloom, making division the more efficient method.

This plant is semi-hardy, sustaining damage at temperatures below 28°F (-2°C) and classified as Hardy III.
