The Dragontree is a rapidly growing deciduous flowering species indigenous to China and Taiwan, and it has also established itself in various regions of the United States, including all of North Carolina. In its early years, this tree can reach heights of up to 20 feet annually, ultimately growing to between 50 and 75 feet tall. During spring, it produces numerous clusters of large, tubular flowers before the leaves emerge. The leaves are heart-shaped and can grow as long as 9 inches.
This tree serves both ornamental purposes and is cultivated for its timber. In Asia, it has been utilized for its ability to extract heavy metals from contaminated soils, mitigate air pollution, and aid in reforestation efforts.
The Dragontree is versatile regarding soil types, thriving in well-drained conditions and preferring full sunlight. However, it is prone to root rot in overly wet soils. It can function effectively as a shade tree in residential yards and parks or as a street tree. For additional options, refer to the recommended native trees listed on the left side of the screen.
According to the University of Florida, the Dragontree has a significant potential for invasiveness, and therefore, planting it is not advised.
