This plant is valued for its striking blue-green needles, which are approximately 1/2 inch in length, as well as its overall size, texture, and form. It is a dense, compact shrub characterized by a nest-like indentation. The ideal growing conditions include cool summer climates found in bogs, bottomlands, flatlands, and dry slopes. While it thrives in rich soil, it can also adapt to poorer soil conditions. In its early stages, the plant needs consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out; however, as it matures, its water requirements decrease.
Black Spruce can be susceptible to various issues, including eastern dwarf mistletoe, needle cast, needle rusts, and canker. Additionally, pests such as aphids, budworms, and bagworms may pose a threat.
