This perennial shrub or tree, belonging to the Araliaceae family, is frequently cultivated as a houseplant in temperate climates. While its vibrant flowers seldom bloom indoors, it serves as an attractive specimen in containers for residential and commercial spaces, such as office corners and atriums, or as a standout tree in larger indoor landscapes. In outdoor settings, it is commonly found in Hawaii, Florida, and certain areas of California.
During the winter months, outdoor specimens can be brought inside. Regular pruning is recommended to manage its growth.
This plant is easily recognized by its palmately compound leaves, which feature stalked, narrow, oblong leaflets with irregular serrations. Young plants display green leaves with a coppery-green hue on the underside, featuring narrow, toothed leaflets that measure up to ½ inch wide and 3 inches long. As the plant ages, the leaves increase in size, reaching up to 3 inches wide and 12 inches long, while also losing some of their youthful glossiness.
