Phonetic Spelling:roh-do-DEN-dron
Genus:Rhododendron
Species:
Family:Ericaceae
This shrub, belonging to the Ericaceae family, can be either evergreen or deciduous. It boasts remarkable winter hardiness but should be shielded from strong winds and prefers well-drained soil, as it does not thrive in overly wet conditions. Rhododendrons and azaleas are acid-loving plants, requiring slightly acidic soil to flourish optimally. They serve as excellent informal hedges and are often overlooked, yet they are widely available in nurseries, making them a fantastic addition to any garden.
Seasons of Interest:
Foliage: Winter, purple; Bloom: Spring, April
Form: Loose, upright
Wildlife Value: These plants can withstand damage from rabbits. The genus Rhododendron is also a host for the specialized bee, Andrena (Andrena) cornelli.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Issues: Rhododendrons can face various insect and disease challenges. Common pests include aphids, borers, lacebugs, leafhoppers, mealybugs, mites, nematodes, scale, thrips, and whiteflies. They are also prone to diseases such as canker, crown rot, root rot, leaf spot, rust, and powdery mildew. While full sun can scorch the leaves, poor drainage can lead to root rot. However, with proper care and placement, a healthy plant should encounter minimal issues.
