Genus:Schizanthus

Species:pinnatus

Family:Solanaceae

Butterfly Flower is a vibrant, cool-weather annual belonging to the nightshade family, native to the mountainous regions of Chile and Argentina. Its blossoms resemble orchids but require far less maintenance. This plant typically reaches a height and width of around 18 inches, and pinching back the tops will promote a bushier growth habit.

From spring through the peak of summer, the flowers bloom in clusters, showcasing a variety of colors including red, pink, yellow, white, and purple, often featuring a distinctive yellow throat. The leaves are also noteworthy, being deeply lobed and reminiscent of ferns.

It thrives in well-drained, average soil and prefers sun to partial shade, although some protection from the afternoon sun is beneficial. Butterfly Flower is easily propagated from seeds and can be used in borders, cutting gardens, containers, or even as a houseplant. Care should be taken to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
