Downy Skullcap is a perennial wildflower that thrives in dry forests and woodlands. Its square stems are adorned with delicate white hairs, and it produces small purplish-blue flowers that appear in loose clusters. This species is commonly found in open woodlands, on slopes, and near streams. It favors moderately moist, well-drained soil but can also adapt to sandy, clay, and less fertile soils. Typically, it flourishes in dry woods or clearings and demonstrates resilience to both heat and drought conditions.

In 2014, Downy Skullcap was honored as the NC Wildflower of the Year, a recognition facilitated by the North Carolina Botanical Garden with support from the Garden Club of North Carolina.
