Phonetic Spelling:TRIL-ee-um FLEKS-ih-pees

Genus:Trillium

Species:flexipes

Family:Melanthiaceae

White Trillium is a perennial wildflower belonging to the lily family, indigenous to North Carolina. It thrives in the mountainous regions, particularly in moist coves situated over mafic or calcareous rocks. This species favors dappled sunlight and requires moist, loamy soils rich in organic matter, ideally covered with a layer of leaf litter to help retain moisture and regulate temperature. Most of its growth takes place in early spring, prior to the emergence of leaves on the overstory trees. The striking white flowers, each with three petals, bloom in mid to late spring within woodland habitats, and the plant enters dormancy by mid-summer. It is classified as a significantly rare or historical species in North Carolina.

The flowers, which can reach up to 2 inches in diameter, are white and three-petaled, often drooping beneath the large bracts on their recurved stems. Over time, the plant develops into clumps. It is best suited for planting in woodland or naturalized settings, as it struggles in areas with hot summer temperatures.

In terms of pests and diseases, White Trillium faces no major threats. However, slugs and snails may occasionally pose a problem, and it can experience issues with leaf spot, rust, and smut. Additionally, this plant does not transplant easily.
