Phonetic Spelling:ULM-us

Genus:Ulmus

Species:

Family:Ulmaceae

The Homestead elm is a hybrid variety known for its resistance to Dutch elm disease. This hybrid has been developed in response to the devastation caused by the disease, which wiped out numerous elm trees, and it combines traits from American, European, and Asian species. When fully grown, its graceful arching shape, resembling an oval to pyramidal form, makes it an excellent choice for providing shade or as a street tree.

This tree is versatile, thriving in various soil conditions, including less fertile soils, and demonstrates reasonable drought resistance once it is established. It prefers full sunlight and should be planted away from concrete surfaces due to its vigorous root system. Pruning can enhance its structural integrity.

However, the Homestead elm may be vulnerable to elm leaf beetles.

For additional details on the Ulmus genus, please refer to further resources.
