  • Photo of Ulmus minor (Ulmus minors)

Phonetic Spelling:ULM-us MY-nor

Genus:Ulmus

Species:minor

Family:Ulmaceae

This is a medium-sized, rapidly growing tree found along riverbanks, belonging to the elm family. It thrives in full sunlight and can adapt to various soil types and pH levels, including saline conditions, although it prefers moist, fertile soils with excellent drainage. It is capable of tolerating wet soil environments. The mature tree typically exhibits an oval shape, featuring a straight trunk and slender, upward-reaching branches. For optimal growth, pruning is recommended between September and October.

However, the Smoothleaf Elm is susceptible to Dutch elm disease and elm leaf beetles, making it a rare find in nurseries.
