Phonetic Spelling:

Genus:Utricularia

Species:subulata

Family:Lentibulariaceae

Slender Bladderwort is a short-lived native carnivorous plant and holds the distinction of being the most widely distributed member of the Utricularia genus. In North Carolina, it thrives primarily in coastal and sandhill regions, with less frequent occurrences in the Piedmont and southern mountainous areas. This plant favors consistently moist, sandy, and peaty soils.

Identifying this diminutive plant can be quite challenging until it produces its small, vibrant yellow flowers. Under favorable conditions, these flowers bloom to attract insects for pollination. Conversely, if the environment is less than ideal, the flowers remain closed, allowing for self-pollination. The plant's carnivorous bladders, located underground, lure microscopic organisms for nourishment, while its leaves are sparse and situated at the base.
