Phonetic Spelling:ZY-riss TOR-tuh

Genus:Xyris

Species:torta

Family:Xyridaceae

Xyris torta is a short-lived perennial plant that originates from a deeply anchored, chestnut-brown bulb. Its yellow flowers tend to bloom individually or in pairs, making them less conspicuous. These small blossoms emerge at the top of the stem, surrounded by numerous scale-like bracts that spiral around the flower head. Each bract gives rise to a single flower, which features three upright, fertile yellow stamens alongside three hairy, sterile ones. As the fruit develops, the bracts persist, creating a seed head that gradually enlarges.

This plant thrives in wetland environments, including bogs, marshes, wet ditches, and the banks of rivers or lakes.
