Species:schneideriana
Family:Ulmaceae
The Chinese Zelkova is a rapidly growing deciduous tree belonging to the elm family, originally found along stream banks in Asia. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil types and pH levels. This tree should be planted in areas with dappled shade to full sunlight, making it suitable for woodland, urban, or riparian environments. While young, it requires protection from harsh winter conditions; however, once established, it can withstand cold temperatures and drought. The tree's bark adds visual interest during the winter months, and it can serve as a striking specimen or be incorporated into a broad landscape border. Although it may be challenging to locate, it is occasionally available as a bonsai.
Regarding pests and diseases, Zelkova trees can be susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease; however, the beetle responsible for transmitting this disease seldom feeds on Zelkova, making infestations uncommon. Additionally, plants in this genus show significant resistance to honey fungus.
